MINNEAPOLIS -- Less than three weeks since having surgery to relieve a pinched nerve in his neck, Justin Morneau will begin baseball activities this week. Twins head trainer Rick McWane gave an update on Morneau's progress Monday morning, and he said Morneau played catch Sunday without any issues."He'll take some grounders," McWane said. Manny Ramirez walked away from baseball Friday after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug, abruptly ending the mercurial career of one of the most talented - and tainted - hitters to play the game.
The slumping Tampa Bay slugger informed Major League Baseball that he would retire rather than face a Anaheim Casey Blake Jersey 100-game suspension. Ramirez served a 50-game ban for violating the drug policy in 2009, and second-time offenders get double that Anaheim Clayton Kershaw Jersey penalty.
"We were obviously surprised when we found out about it today, and hurt by what transpired," said Rays vice president Andrew Friedman, who signed Ramirez to a $2 million, one-year contract in the offseason. Ramirez signed with the Red Sox as a free agent in December 2000. He helped the franchise win the World Series in 2004 and again in 2007.

Its a remarkable record, one frequently listed Mariners Felix Hernandez Jersey among the greatest in baseball Mariners Ichiro Suzuki Jersey history. And yet it is grossly overrated. Why, it already has been the subject of a Sports Illustrated cover, further entrenching the steak in the American psyche.
Considering that nobody before or since has had a hit in more than 44 consecutive games, DiMaggios record is, indeed, safe from would-be Authentic Felix Hernandez Jersey challengers. And in the age of Adam Lind Jersey 24/7 media saturation, in an era when the attention begins as soon as a hitting streak reaches double-digits, its conceivable that anybody who comes remotely close to DiMaggio would be reduced to blubbering in the fetal position in a corner of the shower.
And yet, the record and hitting streaks in general are overrated. Heres why:
1. Simply having a hit in a game does not mean a player had a good game. Six times during his streak, DiMaggio had one hit with no extra-base hits, no runs, and no RBI. Whats special about that?
2. Simply having a hit doesnt necessarily mean a player did a lot to help his team win.
To DiMaggios credit, the Yankees went on a tear during the streak, going 41-13 (with two ties). Then again, they were the Yankees. They were in the midst of winning seven pennants in eight years. They were pretty good regardless.
3. A walk isnt quite as good as a hit but its close. DiMaggio was a great player, but he never walked much. His .325 career batting average ranks 44th all-time, while his .398 on-base percentage ranks 64th.
During the streak, DiMaggio had 91 hits, 21 walks, and was hit by a Authentic Adam Lind Jersey pitch twice, reaching base 114 times. 5. During the streak, DiMaggio wasnt as effective of a hitter as Williams was for the entire season. DiMaggio played in 139 games during the 1941 season. Here are his stats during the streak, extrapolated over 139 games, compared with Williams stats for the season of 143 games.

Comparing any hitter to Williams is patently unfair. Plus, Williams wasnt nearly as good of a fielder, and DiMaggios team won the pennant. But DiMaggios 1941 MVP award appears silly in retrospect.
This isnt meant to denigrate DiMaggio as a player. He was a great player, one of the five or six best center fielders in history.
But it is meant to denigrate the significance placed on Nationals Adam Lind Jersey hitting streaks, one of the most overrated aspects of baseball.

The team that plays together stays together; but so does the team that helps those in need together. It all started when Chester resident and local business owner, Mary Schindel was diagnosed with AML, a form of Leukemia, in 2006.
