PHOENIX -- Josh Beckett took the prudent way out Tuesday night. When he felt soreness in his left knee warming up for the second inning, the Red Sox right-hander elected not to pitch for the American League All-Stars and informed manager Ron Washington he was out.

He said that's what he pledged to Sox manager Terry Francona he would do if he sensed any discomfort.

For the past two weeks, Tom Blanchette has been home only when it's dark outside. Just after dawn each morning, Blanchette heads off to his job cheap authentic jerseys as director of operations at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and he doesn't return until close to midnight. "Our daily schedule for the past two weeks has been from 6 a.m. until 11 at night working on race preparations," Blanchette says. An access road near the tunnel has also been widened, Blanchette says, and the main track entrance has been freshly stripped and seal-coated, along with "many other facilities management projects."

Former Iowa coach Hayden Fry famously dubbed quarterback Chuck Long "destined for greatness" after spring practice in 1982, before Long had started a game for the Hawkeyes.

Fry turned out to be right, but it was a statement from one of Long's other coaches that foreshadowed his long-term future in the sport.

Long was midway through his record-setting career at Iowa when he returned to his high school, Wheaton North in suburban Chicago, to assist with the school's summer football camp. CHICAGO -- Florida Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria isn't counting out his team.

Loria said "anything can happen" and he's not ruling out playoff contention even as the Marlins entered Friday's game against the Chicago Cubs last in the NL East at 44-48, 13½ games out in the division and 10 back in the wild card.

They've improved with a season-high six straight wins after a miserable June that included a 1-19 stretch in which Edwin Rodriguez resigned and 80-year-old Jack McKeon replaced him on an interim basis as manager.

"I haven't counted us out yet," wholesale sports jerseys Loria said. "I hope you guys haven't. I know it looks tough, but what are we now -- four under? Jack says as soon as we get (to .500), you never know what can happen."

He added: "I would never bet against Jack McKeon."

"There'll be a number of candidates, but right now, Jack's the manager," Loria said. "We'll see where it goes at the end of the year. There is a chance. I'm not ruling anything out, but it will have to be somebody with experience. I'm not going to allow a repeat of what happened."

The Marlins flirted with the idea of hiring a big-name manager last season, stirring speculation about courtships with Ozzie Guillen and Bobby Valentine.

Instead, they decided to retain Rodriguez after he took over on an interim basis last June 23 and led them to a 46-46 record the rest of the way. He got a one-year contract in the offseason but resigned on June 19, with the Marlins in a full-fledged free fall.

Even so, Loria insisted the resignation caught him off guard.

Matsuzaka had Tommy John surgery on June 10 in Los Angeles and has been rehabbing at the Red Sox's spring training facility in Fort Myers, Fla. Because the Sox are playing the Rays, Matsuzaka wanted to meet with team trainer Mike Reinold.

"He just wanted to check in when he's only an hour and a half down the road," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. "He just wanted to check in with Mike. He looks good and cheap jerseys he's got good range of motion. It's nice to see him."

Matsuzaka explained his daily routine, which begins at 8:30 a.m. and finishes at 3 p.m. His rehab includes exercises to regain his range of motion, along with core strength and lower-body exercises.

During his time in Fort Myers, Matsuzaka said he's been paying close attention to the team's results.

"When I see the team playing well, I want to hurry to get back to the team," he said. "It's nice to be away from the team and focus on what I cheap jerseys have to do with my rehab."

MINNEAPOLIS -- Carl Eller doesn't want to be one of the bad guys, not when the NFL seems so close to getting back to work.

The Hall of Fame defensive end, one of Minnesota's fearsome Purple People Eaters, is nonetheless unhappy about wholesale nba jerseys how he and his fellow retirees have been treated as NFL owners and current players negotiate a new deal to split more than $9 billion in revenue.

That deal, of course, will include retirement benefits for the former players of this dangerous sport.

Eller and other retirees have sued both the NFL and the NFL Players Association, complaining that they've illegally been left out of the latest talks after taking part in court-ordered mediation sessions earlier this year. They say both sides have also conspired to keep benefit levels and pension payments low in the new collective bargaining agreement.

It could be life or death for some players, so it's essential that we get this. We're not doing this just for more money. We're doing this just because lives depend on it."

Nolan Harrison, the NFLPA's senior director of retired players, declined to comment specifically on the retirees' accusations because of the pending litigation. But he said retiree benefits are being taken seriously: "We know that the guys are working hard to get a deal done. There are current and former players in the room."

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said improvements for retired players "have been an important part of the negotiations," pointing to the presence of retired players on both sides of the table, including Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson and Green Bay Packers president and chief executive officer Mark Murphy.

Eller and other retired players have argued for years that the benefits are inadequate.

Many of the pioneers of the NFL have paid a lifelong physical price for playing a high-impact sport, and their push for better care has gained steam and public support in recent years.

With his name also on the still-pending antitrust lawsuit filed against the league, Eller was wholesale nba jersey often present at early negotiating sessions. But the retirees' role has been drastically reduced, with owners and the current players meeting on their own at various places around the country.

"They gave us a seat, but no chair," Hall of Fame offensive lineman Joe DeLamielleure said. "Carl Eller was told that he has a seat. These guys are negotiating again without us."

"We've had both the players and the league to admit that there were many shortcomings in the system the way it is. We want to be at the table to negotiate how we improve those on our own," Eller said.

Though the league is named in the lawsuit as well, Eller said most of the frustration has been directed toward the current players.

"The players have no authority to negotiate for us and the league should not be negotiating our benefits with the players association," Eller said. "That is in direct violation to what's been established at this point. They're having it both ways. That's very contradictory. It looks like to me that they're pretty much just playing games with the law, with total disregard with what's been mandated. It just kind of gives you an idea of their arrogance and what they think of the retired players."

One of the problems retired players have endured in their push over the years is disorganization -- a number of groups exist. One of the most prominent is the NFL Alumni Association, led by former New York Giants defensive standout George Martin.

Martin's group, like Eller's, has publicly wholesale reds jersey called on commissioner Roger Goodell and NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith to keep the interests of the retirees in mind, particularly for those who played prior to the creation of the previous CBA in 1993.

"I understand the position that they've taken. Obviously, there's a lot of animosity, impatience and frustration," Martin said last week. But he said the NFLAA is not interested in legal action.

"We would prefer to take a more diplomatic approach to this whole settlement," he said.

Martin said he's hopeful of an increase in retiree benefits by as much as 60 percent from the previous level. He also said nearly 1,000 retirees have signed up for a new long-term health care program in what he sees as progress for their cause.

Hall of Fame tight end Mike Ditka, the former Bears and New Orleans Saints head wholesale falcons jersey coach, decided not to be added as a plaintiff in Eller's lawsuit because he doesn't "believe in that" and isn't "mad at anybody" on either side.

However, Ditka echoed Eller's concerns about a perceived lack of respect.
